MPEG Formatted VCD Slide Shows with
transitions are MPEG movie files and are
limited to 352x240 NTSC /x288 PAL. SVCD is
480x480 NTSC x576 PAL. So a NTSC VCD at
standard bit rates will be pretty low res.
Our recommended VCD Slide Show uses the
VCD2 format, which is much higher in
resolution.
The Best VCD Slide Show Uses JPEGs
The best VCD Slide Show uses JPEG
stills for the Slideshows and they use the
VCD 2.0 compatible CDR 720x480 format for
the image display. This will, of course,
give noticeably crisper images in the
slideshows. These images will show on your
large-screen TV and still be sharp and
clear whereas VCDs at 352x240 or even
SVCDs at 480x480 will be noticeably
blurry. DVD format also has the same
resolution as VCD 2.0: 720x480. VHS Tape
resolution is approx 320x240 pixels just
for comparison
This will account for the nice sharp
images that the VCD Slide Show will
provide for you when compared to
do-it-yourself programs that you may try
to use. We like the cute transitions
of the mpeg movies but would never want to
give up the higher resolution images.
There is a very beautiful difference. We
want to see the pictures not the
transitions.
VCD Slide Show in VCD2 Format
The best VCD Slide Show uses the VCD2
format providing very high quality images
on your TV and gives you the ability to
copy the disk and share it with friends
and relatives. Most DVD players
manufactured in the last two years have no
problem playing the VCD format. DVD
players that can play this format are very
inexpensive. I looked at one that sells
for only $40 at a local Electronics store.
Apex is one of the lower end manufacturers
that makes inexpensive players that do
very well with the VCD format. There are,
however, some DVD players that are still
being manufactured that cannot play the
VCD format.
VCD Slide Show and VHS Tapes
If your DVD player is not compatible
with the VCD format, that doesn't mean
that you shouldn't convert your photos and
35mm slides to digital format. Just
because you made the mistake of purchasing
a player that does not play VCD's does not
mean that you should just throw away all
your pictures. Players are cheap; your
pictures are not. Your VCD Slide Show can
also be converted to VHS tapes of your
Slideshows so that you can have the Disk
and the VHS tape. When you upgrade your
DVD player, you can get one that is
compatible with the VCD format.
A good VCD Slide Show, will produce a
Photo Slide Show that will view at very
crisp and highly defined resolution even
on your large screen TV. Think of those
little cropped images blown up to the size
of a big screen TV.
